Is a retail sales export useful for forecasting?
It depends on the missing coverage and permission to use it. A buyer may already receive better data directly from its customers.
Describe the series.
Explain the time period, reporting interval, units, item/category coverage, stockouts, closures, promotions and missing values. Use general location information and exclude customer and payment records.
Ask what an external series adds.
A team may want an unusual category, sparse-demand case or independent evaluation set. Those are hypotheses to test; we do not claim that retail forecasting vendors buy generic shop exports.
Agree the evaluation and license.
Clarify the minimum history, forecasting horizon, train/evaluation partition, metric and rights. A CSV export from a POS tool does not establish the business’s authority to sell it.
Use existing integrations as a reality check.
Lineup.ai and Tenzo describe using operational sales data in forecasting. This supports the use case, not demand to purchase data from DataVault.
